January 2022: Cropin, a global ag-ecosystem intelligence provider, announced its strategic partnership with Heaven Sprout Foods, a distributor and exporter of plant-based solutions. With this partnership Cropin continues to grow its focus on enabling agri-businesses in the Latin American region adopt and drive digitization across their operations.

Cropin’s globally adopted digital solutions combined with Heaven Sprouts’ market know-how will help agri-businesses in the region accelerate their digital transformation journey. The partnership would encourage adoption of advanced tech solutions to empower the ecosystem and support the sustainable development of Latin-American farming communities. Speaking about the partnership, Cropin’s CRO Jitesh Shah said, “Along with Heaven Sprouts Foods, we look forward to doing our part in enabling technology-led agriculture in Latin America. We believe that by collaborating with a regional innovator like Heaven Sprouts Foods, we can improve agricultural practices and positively impact livelihoods and the environment at large. The experience and the knowledge of the region they bring to the table make them a great partner for Cropin to accelerate digital transformation in this sector.“

Latin America accounts for 25% of global food exports. Agriculture contributes 4.7% of the GDP of Latin America and employs 14% of the population. Expressing her thoughts about the partnership, Susana Goitia Milano, Founder and CEO, Heaven Sprout Foods, said, “We are proud to continue building this wonderful partnership with Cropin. Eager to enhance local agriculture businesses, empowering them with innovation & technology. This virtuous circle will generate a social impact supporting the sustainable food system in Latin-America. The real challenge is to evolve from intuitive agriculture to smart farming, from ancient knowledge to big data. Agri-Tech will definitively speed up the food industry in the following years, but education and training of the users will be key to establish this new way of farming: The new set of habits for the agricultural sector”

Cropin’s unique suite of products will ensure an all-inclusive, sustainable, and productive agriculture in Latin America, focusing on low carbon emissions through farming practices and a climate-smart approach.

November 2021: As part of their continued focus to enable sustainable agriculture by leveraging technology, CropIn, the Bengaluru-based Ag-Tech major, has won the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) Climate Adaptation Innovation Challenge at COP26 UNFCCC, Glasgow, to provide digital farming intelligence solutions and increase resilience and climate adaptation of 200,000 smallholder farmers in three least developed countries in Africa over two years. The International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) has joined as a GEF partner agency for the project. This initiative will leverage CropIn’s existing footprint across 18 countries in Africa.

Climate change mitigation needs technology-enabled solutions to reach smallholder farmers without requiring them to make massive investments in infrastructure. Through this partnership, CropIn will be implementing its global Climate-Smart Advisory Platform, SmartFarm. The platform leverages AI models built on extensive agriculture knowledge graphs derived from CropIn’s trillions of farm pixel data. This solution, combined with the human efforts of 2,000 agri-entrepreneurs trained in digital technologies, will provide actionable insights and advisories using AI & ML to enable smallholder farmers across six agri-value chains – cotton, cocoa, cashew, cassava, maize, and rice.

The project includes end-to-end digitization and streamlining the farm management process for smallholder farmers, and creating a support system that provides early warnings for pest and disease outbreaks, besides advisories on climate, soil, and water management at a plot level. It will build the institutional capacity of identified lead farmers’ organizations, rural institutions, and governments for long-term asset creation and sustainability. The project aims to mitigate risks for all the agri-value chain players and improve price stability based on trust and confidence created by data and evidence.

Speaking about the partnership, Kunal Prasad, Co-founder, and COO, CropIn, said, “We are excited about this opportunity as it allows us to strengthen the farming community and make them more resilient to climate change by leveraging our solution. SmartFarm also enables farm-related businesses to respond more organically to environmental challenges and adjust their systems and processes accordingly. The platform ensures reduction in risks for all actors in the agri-value chain and increasing long term sustainability while promoting intra-engagement of actors for credit facilitation and market linkage based on trust and data.”

September 2021

CropIn, a leading AI & data-led organization in line with its vision to help solve the food security issue in the world, has partnered with Mucheki Consulting to bring digitization in the African agricultural ecosystem. This alliance is expected to strengthen CropIn’s presence in Africa and enable the creation of a digital ecosystem in the country. Through this partnership, agri stakeholders will get valuable real-time insights ensuring better decision making that will bring about consistency, dependability, sustainability, better crop yield, and increasing the financial stability of the farmers.

Mucheki Consulting caters to the entire continent of Africa with a presence in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe. It offers specialized ERP solutions and services to progressive businesses across the African continent.

With this initiative, CropIn aims to complement the ERP solutions that Mucheki Consulting provides to their customers. This will give a comprehensive end-to-end package. CropIn’s digital solutions will also help provide key data and insights about the soil, climate, pests, and other details to governments to help them address the food security problems in Africa and restore balance. Customers are expected to benefit from better business intelligence, improved business operations, optimized costs, enhanced quality levels, superior collaboration, and business growth.

Speaking about the partnership, Mr. Jitesh Shah, CRO, CropIn, said, “We are delighted to ally with Mucheki Consulting, which allows us to bring a positive change in the lives of farmers and food providers in Africa. Our continuous endeavor has been to provide unique technology-based solutions to the agriculture value chain. Through this partnership, new vistas can open up in Africa for a sustainable agricultural ecosystem.”

“The situation over the last eighteen months has accelerated innovative efforts to design and employ the power of digital technology to provide innovative solutions to existing problems in agriculture. Emerging evidence from Africa indicates that new-age technology can improve the productivity and income of marginal farmers by improving their efficiency, increasing traceability, and improving access to inputs and financial markets. Agricultural data collection, use, and analysis have enormous potential to disrupt existing agricultural business models. New strategic alliances between the private and government sectors can help reap the positive benefits of digital technology.”, he further added.

Speaking about the partnership, Mr. Churchward Mucheki Group, CEO, Mucheki Consulting said, “Agriculture is at the heart of the African people. With an estimation of over 60 million farms, modern-day farming has become an intensely scientific practice. The increasing population, ever-changing demographic landscapes, Global warming, and diverse urban dietary requirements all call for a technologically enhanced value chain. Mucheki has the vision to play an instrumental role in Africa’s agricultural sector, and we believe CropInhas a host of digital solutions to complement our initiative. . Plagued by a low per capita income, Food security remains a battle to be won in Africa. We believe that the technological support/ tech-solutions that CropIn offers will assist in this initiative by streamlining Agri-production processes which will result in overall affordability of quality produce even for low-income earners. We are elated about this strategic partnership and are confident of the positive influence this relationship will bring to our African Agriculture.”

The partnership aims to strengthen farmers of Africa by digitizing farms and offering smart data on weather, disease prediction, crop health, yield estimation, soil quality, and risk of pestilence in real-time.

August 2021

CropIn has witnessed phenomenal growth over the last few years fuelled by a combination of new product introductions, entry into international markets and creation of new target customer segments in the Ag value chain. CropIn started with an initial investment of $10,000, which was raised from friends & family, Seed investors and early employees who believed in the vision of the founders. These early employees and investors became one of the early shareholders in the company.

In the recently concluded Series C funding, the company raised $20 million of primary capital, taking the overall investment into the company to $33 million. This was followed by a secondary sale of $4.3 Mn and was open to the company’s employees and investors holding stocks. Several early investors and employees who sold their stocks realized nearly 70X returns on their investment. In the first of its kind move in the agtech space, this is a huge value creation for the employees and depicts the healthy growth that the company has been witnessing. A Secondary Sale or ESOP buyback ensures that employees receive benefits for the impact that they are creating with their work and contributes significantly to the growth of the company.

Vishal Kuchanur, one of the early employees at CropIn and one of the beneficiaries of the Secondary Sale, shared his perspective on working with CropIn, “My experience at CropIn as a Technologist has been truly enriching and gratifying. Being in a then-unknown sector of Agritech and pioneering the space, CropIn is transforming organizations’ perception of digital technology in the Ag space. I wanted to work in an organization which had a real impact in the lives of people and CropIn gave me an opportunity to ideate, experiment, and grow while building products that streamline agri value chains globally.”

“When I had first met Krishna and Kunal in 2011, agri-tech as a category of product solutions was almost unknown. But, Krishna and Kunal were convinced that digitisation of agricultural data and then building smart solutions on top of it, for all stakeholders involved, would be essential for improving and optimizing crop quality and output. While they were at a very early stage then, it was this conviction of theirs which drove me to invest in them. And since, they’ve come a long way – in terms of multiple products & innovations, lots of happy customers, an efficient team, and multiple rounds of funding as well. It has been an absolute delight to back entrepreneurs like them, and see their vision unfold, while being a part of it in a small way. And I am very excited for the journey forward.” – Pallav Nadhani, Early Investor at CropIn.

Vasudev Avadhani, who has been the advisor to Krishna Kumar and CropIn throughout, shared his views on the company’s recent achievements “Krishna approached me almost 9 years back with his most innovative idea to use smart mobile technology to reform and transform Indian Agriculture, leaving a cushy job in a top foreign multinational, which showed his courage of conviction.

During initial years of operating in a small rented house, I could see his fierce determination & perseverance to secure first key accounts. He showed similar determination while securing his first few investors to pull through CropIn’s most difficult times! Now with his secondary sale of shares to prominent VCs and profitable operations in several foreign countries, I am quite convinced that CropIn (his baby) would soon join India’s Unicorn Club of startups.“

CropIn was established with the vision of improving farmer livelihoods by harnessing the power of AI and Machine Learning through predictive analytics and modelling into agriculture. CropIn is determined to progressively achieve its goal of building a path for the employees’ overall growth and pursue opportunities to create wealth for the employees through the company’s stocks.

“It is both humbling and satisfying to enable tremendous return on investment and value for our early employees and investors who believed in us. Nearly 60% of our employees hold stock options in the company. As a growing company we will be looking for other opportunities to expand our stock programs to provide this as an additional benefit for our employees and enable them to participate more actively in the growth journey of the organization”, said Krishna Kumar, Founder and CEO, CropIn.

The company has been actively implementing some high impact work with a very diverse set of clientele and partners globally with the ultimate goal of making farming sustainable. So far, CropIn has digitized over 16 million acres of farmland and enriched the lives of nearly 7 million farmers, across 52+ countries covering 400 crops and over 10,000 crop varieties.

June 2021: CropIn, in association with ThinkAg and HSBC, conducted a webinar on “Digitizing Crop Insurance” as a part of the AgFin Tech Series, Digitizing Agri-Finance & Insurance. The primary focus of the series is to advance the importance of technology in the agriculture space. CropIn’s tagline “Re-imagining Agriculture With Data”, outlines how technological innovation in agriculture can serve the marginalized in diverse ways, especially when supported by strong financial institutions.

The chief guest for the event was Shri Rajesh Meena, Registrar, Co-operative Dept, Govt of Bihar and was moderated by Dr Kolli N Rao, Senior Advisor, IRICBS. The session started with an opening remark from Mr. Hemendra Mathur, Co-Founder, ThinkAg and Venture Partner, Bharat Innovation Fund. Along with Mr. Kunal Prasad, Co-founder and COO, CropIn, the webinar was conducted in the presence of industry stalwarts like Mr Azad Mishra, Sr. Vice President for Rural and Agri-business Group, HDFC Ergo GIC; Mr Ashish Agrawal, President, and Head, Agribusiness, Bajaj Allianz GIC; Mr Mangesh Patankar, VP & Head of Agriculture Reinsurance India, Swiss Re; Apoorva Tatia, Head – Rural, Crop & Health Underwriting, Reliance General Insurance, and Mr Pushan Mahapatra, President, Strategic Investments & Head of Open Market, SBI General Insurance. The insightful session ended with a closing remark from Jitesh Shah, CRO, CropIn.

Commenting on the webinar, Shri Rajesh Meena, Registrar, Co-operative Dept, Govt of Bihar, said, “It was a great session, focusing on one very important aspect of Agriculture i.e. Agri Insurance and how it can be made more comprehensive with the use of the latest technology available at our disposal. Interaction with various stakeholders particularly the professionals working in the field of insurance was a great initiative. Such webinars are a welcome step towards making people aware of the problems that the Agri sector is facing and how we can address them. Ultimately the purpose should be how we can ensure farmer’s prosperity and their financial inclusion. I thank the organizers for this initiative”.

Mr. Pushan Mahapatra, President, Strategic Investment & Head of Open Market, SBI General Insurance, shared his views on importance of knowledge sharing across the value chain and role of such virtual sessions, “The contribution of agriculture in India’s economy is paramount. While the sector has taken significant strides, there are still various challenges that can be addressed through means of brainstorming newer ideas, the way AgFinTech series hosted a webinar. The discussion brought to fore multiple insights on how digitalization in crop insurance needs to reach the last mile and its importance in protecting farmers from potential risks. I am certain with discussions like these, the crop insurance segment will see a significant leap in the near future and will benefit farmers.

The panellists addressed and discussed the need to drive financial inclusion and progressive digital strategy for farmer prosperity using advanced technologies at an economic scale and develop need-based Agri-insurance products/models for insurers, farmer-beneficiaries and government agencies.

Dr. Kolli N Rao, Senior Advisor, IRICBS shared his views on the role of digitalization in predicting and preventing risks related to agriinsurance products, ‘Crop insurance despite over 40 years of presence in the country is neither adequately understood nor appreciated. Digitalization leading to transparency, fair and faster loss settlement could bridge this gap.

Commenting on the role of Agtech in increasing credit efficiency in insurance delivery process, Mr. Kunal Prasad, Co-founder and COO, CropIn, said, “The agriculture sector has transformed with the aid of digital inclusion. With the transition over the years, Agri Technology can now serve as an enabler for the improvement in agribusinesses, while Banks and financial institutions can leverage technology to estimate crop health, growth, and yield in real-time. Digitizing Agri-Finance & Insurance will drive financial inclusion and progressive digital strategy for farmer prosperity using advanced technologies at an economic scale and pave the way for strategic partnerships between financial institutions in the field of agriculture, ultimately enhancing the efficiency of credit and insurance delivery in the Priority Sector.”

Partnerships of Insurers and AgFinTech players for enhancing the efficiency of marketing and distribution for agri-insurance products through seamless service integrations was also a topic of discussion. The house also agreed that the union of Agtech & Rural Insurance is a successful formula for financial inclusion and farmer prosperity.

“Swiss Re has been associated with a number of pilots in India, where remote sensing data was harnessed for optimisation of crop cutting and sowing failure detection,” said Mangesh Niranjan Patankar, Head Agriculture India, Swiss Re. “There is further scope to develop alternate indices such as Crop Health Factor – trialed in the state of West Bengal – soil moisture etc., which go beyond the traditional manual yield index and bring in more efficiency during claim settlement.” – Mr Mangesh Patankar, VP & Head of Agriculture Reinsurance India, Swiss Re

Technology plays a significant role in scaling up the reach and operations of crop insurance schemes like PMFBY with precision agriculture. Use of historical and real-time satellite imagery, UAVs, remote-sensing based crop health monitoring, crop acreage, crop yield estimates along with local socio-economic and commodity pricing data (use of AI/ML and big-data analytics) for risk assessment during underwriting and settlement of claims will also be a crucial part in the agriculture sector.

June 2021: CropIn, a leading AI and data-led Agtech organization has joined the newly formed European Carbon+ Farming Coalition to accelerate progress towards the carbon neutrality goals of the European Green Deal. This initiative is catalyzed by the World Economic Forum’s CEO Action Group for the European Green Deal and is part of the emerging food and nature platform, 100 Million Farmers: Transitioning towards Net-Zero, Nature-Positive Food Systems. The coalition will be working towards decarbonizing the European food systems while maximizing benefits such as soil health and farmer resilience.

Today, Agriculture in Europe is responsible for 10 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. CropIn as one of the partners in the European Carbon + Farming Coalition, will take a farmer-centric approach and focus on increasing the uptake of regenerative and climate-smart agriculture practices, identifying the roadblocks to adoption, and designing solutions with economic, practical and ecological benefits to the farmers. It will also work to develop financial tools to empower farmers in managing transition risk and recommend the right set of farmer incentives. This initiative aims to be a sizable contributor to Europe’s net-zero emission plan with the adoption of smart processes such as no-till, cover crop, and nutrient and manure management while maximizing other benefits such as soil health and farmer resilience.

Since soil is the second largest absorber of carbon, second to the oceans, it is important to adopt on-farm technologies to minimise the carbon emission. The transformation of the agricultural sector through the widespread implementation of technology-based farm management will prevent any further damage caused to the environment.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr Krishna Kumar, CEO of CropIn, said, “Digital & Data-driven Platforms are key enablers in bringing large-scale transformation by engaging stakeholders, including farmers, that will join the program. CropIn is excited to be a part of the European Carbon+ Farming Coalition. Leveraging on our decade long experience of working in 52 countries with our agtech platform, we have been able to map the ag knowledge graph which will help us to contribute positively to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon world.

We firmly believe that building a multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral platform to support the mission will make our planet a better place to live by addressing some of the complex challenges around Climate Change, Bio-diversity & Food Security. Farmers would be the key contributors to the success of the coalition and hence a data-driven adaptive solution would be of great value to support their transition towards sustainable & zero-carbon farming.”

The organizations partnering in the emerging European Carbon+ Farming Coalition currently are BASF, Bayer, CropIn, European Conservation Agriculture Federation (ECAF), EIT Food, Hero Group, Planet, Swiss Re, University of Glasgow, World Economic Forum, Yara International ASA & Zurich Insurance Group.
